Mark, I always had a problem with this do-follow while I think many folks underestimate the value of a good, targeted AND nofollow link. Even if nofollowed, some links might be just the ones that make the difference.;)

Thanks, Justin. I'm all about knowledge rather than blind conformity. There is no reason to deprive the comment love from the visitor. People need to understand that too much has been done already to prevent comment spam from ever gracing their posts via services like WordPress.com-resident Akismet and the hosted WP Disqus plugin.

I'm glad that Thesis (what this site uses) provides an option for this on the site options menu, but it's worth noting that there are such plugins that help convert WP blogs into comment love blogs, as you say, so thank you for that. All said and done, WordPress provides a lot of freedom from excessive programming via such themes and plugins, including for SEO purposes, in general.

I do this for my blog using the “NoFollow Free” plugin for wordpress. It has a number of options to configure the criteria for removing the nofollow attribute from commenter's links.

Great tactical info on comment love here Mark. From a basic editorial sense it seems obvious that we want our commenting friends to get value in exchange for their valuable comments. I think articles like this make it easier for people to decide on their own instead of implicitly relying on a generic piece of “wisdom”.
